What is Naturopathic Medicine?

What is the difference between an MD and an ND?

The credentials “MD” stand for medical doctor and refer to a conventional medical practitioner. This is probably who you think of when someone says, “I’m going to the doctor.” The credential “ND” stand for naturopathic doctor and refers to someone who has attended naturopathic medical school. Naturopathic doctors often use a wide range of clinical tools including clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, and lifestyle interventions to support and optimize health.

What kind of training do Naturopathic Doctors receive?

After earning a bachelor degree, all licensed naturopathic doctors complete 4 years of residential medical school training. In medical school, Naturopathic Doctors are trained in a variety of therapeutic interventions including lifestyle interventions, clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, and homeopathy. In addition to these naturopathic options, Naturopathic Doctors are also trained in conventional treatment options including pharmaceuticals.

Does Dr. Golden see people with my specific condition? Can Naturopathic Medicine help me?

Probably. The great thing about naturopathic medicine is the holistic approach. Dr. Golden treats you as a person, not just a diagnosis, which expands the clinical toolbox immensely. Does Dr. Golden accept insurance? Will my Health Savings Account cover the consultation?

Dr. Golden’s innovative care model is not covered by insurance. Health savings accounts may cover her services while others will not. You may request an invoice to submit to your health savings account provider though coverage is not guaranteed.

How much does a consultation cost?

The fee for a Single Consultation is $250 and as the title suggests, consists of a single consultation. Dr. Golden also offers a Membership Plan for an annual commitment of $150/mo and gives you unlimited consultations and greater access to Dr. Golden’s expertise to really rock your health. How will I see Dr. Golden? How can I schedule a consultation?

Dr. Golden can “see” anyone, anywhere because all consultations will take place in Dr. Golden’s virtual office. If you would like to schedule a consultation you can email Dr. Golden at to set up an initial consultation. Prior to your consultation, you will receive an invitation to create an account in Dr. Golden’s Health Portal which will allow you to send and receive secure communications with Dr. Golden and request follow up consultations.

What can I expect at my initial consultation?

Whether you have chosen a Single Consultation or the Membership Plan, initial consultations are 60 minutes long. Dr. Golden will have reviewed your Health Intake Form so you can get down to business. You will typically spend the first part of the consultation discussing your specific concern and Dr. Golden will ask additional questions to make sure she has all the information she needs. The latter part of your visit will be dedicated to going over the personalized recommendations Dr. Golden has for you to really rock your health. You are welcome to ask any questions you have about the recommendations to make sure you will be as successful as possible.

What should I “bring” with me to my first consultation?

All consultations will take place in Dr. Golden’s virtual office. Prior to your initial consultation you will receive, fill out, and send back a Health Intake Form so Dr. Golden can hit the ground running in your consultation.

Does Dr. Golden require labs before my first consultation?

Nope. Dr. Golden will use the information you submitted on your Health Intake Form to make initial recommendations. If you have had lab work completed in the last 6 months you can send it to Dr. Golden via your Health Portal account.

How often will I have appointments?

If you have scheduled a Single Consultation, Dr. Golden will address your current questions and need. Based on the health plan created in your initial visit, a follow up visit may be recommended for after you’ve had a chance to implement changes and would require you to schedule another Single Consultation or opt for the Membership Plan. If you have a Membership Plan appointments are available as often as you like, or Dr. Golden suggests, and are all included in your plan.

What costs can I expect other than the consultation fee?

Dr. Golden understands cost is a concern for many people and does her best to be as cost effective as possible in her approach. If supplements are recommended, this would be an out of pocket expense and Dr. Golden can steer you in the right direction to the best brands to get the most benefit for your buck! Dr. Golden will work with you to personalize recommendation and accommodate any budget.

Can supplements interfere with my current medications?

Yes, they can. Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s safe in every circumstance. It’s important to consult experts like Naturopathic Doctors before adding supplements to your health regimen. Dr. Golden is an expert in drug/supplement interactions and can help you choose supplements that will not interfere with your current medications.

If Dr. Golden recommends supplements for me, does the brand I choose matter?

The short answer is yes, brand does matter. It’s important to choose supplement brands that have strict quality control standards to make sure what it says on the label is exactly the same as what is actually in your supplement! Luckily Dr. Golden is well versed in high quality supplements and can guide you to the best picks. Any supplement Dr. Golden recommend can like be found though her virtual supplement shop or other major online retailers.

Does Dr. Golden write prescriptions or do physical exams?

Dr. Golden does not currently write prescription or do physical exams. If you would like, she would be happy to collaborate with your primary care provider on these things.

Is Dr. Golden available on an urgent basis?

Dr. Golden does her best to schedule appointments in a timely matter. If you have subscribed to a membership plan, you may contact Dr. Golden via the methods discussed at your initial consultation. If you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency hang up and dial 911!
